Camp-Ready Tips: When Kids Need to Bring Medications

If your child takes medications, being away from home requires some extra planning for a safe and enjoyable stay.

ISMP Canada learned about a child at camp who was given medication that was meant for another camper with the same first name, instead of their own medication.

These tips can help you and your child prepare for camp:

  • Help your child learn about their medications (including what they look like) by using the 5 Questions to Ask About My Medicine.
  • Ask the camp about their policies and procedures. Fill out any required forms, or ask your child's prescriber to complete them, if necessary.
  • Prepare your child’s medication supply:
    • Make sure each medication is labelled with your child's first and last names, the medication name, when and how it should be taken, and any special instructions.
    • Send enough of each medication for the entire time away. You may want to include an extra few days' supply, in case your child is away longer than expected.
    • Think about asking your pharmacy to pack the medications in blister packs. This can help keep the medications organized.
    • Provide a photo of your child and your contact information.
  • Help your child understand how to access emergency medications (e.g., EpiPen, inhaler) when at camp.
  • Encourage your child to speak up if they have any questions about their medications.

This newsletter was developed in collaboration with Best Medicines Coalition and Patients for Patient Safety Canada.

Recommendations are shared with healthcare providers, through the ISMP Canada Safety Bulletin, so that changes can be made together.
